Covid-19 Mythbusting (LA)

Covid-19 is now the #1 leading cause of deaths in the U.S. Cases are rising rapidly in the #LosAngeles county. So, CJ Johnson joined Team Friday LA to oversee a Social Influencer Campaign for the @lapublichealth. CJ even used his own influence to join the campaign to share some resources, facts, and hopefully bust some myths and misinformation out there. If you live in LA, make sure to follow the @lapublichealth to fact-check and do your own independent research as well. Click the link to learn more about COVID-19 Prevention here.

- Myth #1: There is a 99% survival rate with COVID-19. A 99% “survival rate” sounds much better than it is. A hypothetical mortality rate of 1% would still result in a massive number of deaths if left to spread unchecked. It means that this virus would be 10X more lethal than the seasonal flu. If everyone in the U.S. contracted COVID-19, that 1% rate would lead to about 3,300,000 deaths.

- Myth #2: You’re not sick if you don’t have any symptoms. If you don’t have symptoms, you can’t spread the virus. NOT TRUE. The fact is, up to 50% of people with absolutely no symptoms whatsoever still spread the virus to others. With COVID, there is something called asymptomatic spread - meaning the virus is invisible and they don’t even know they have it so they unknowingly pass it along to others... and it just continues on and on and on.

- Myth #3: COVID-19 is no worse than the flu. FALSE. Just to put it in perspective, there are between 12,000 to 61,000 flu-related deaths annually in the United States – and currently, there are more than 318,000 COVID-19 deaths - and counting.

- Myth #4: Masks don’t work and there is no point. FALSE. Science has proven that wearing a mask is the #1 thing you can do to protect yourself from the virus and to help slow the spread of the virus to others. Wearing a mask protects you up to 65% more than not wearing a mask.
